A simple motif with a big effect: a big bright moon with lots of black bats. Thank to the free template, you can easily craft this Halloween bat craft with kids.
This Halloween bat craft is not scary but atmospheric, because Halloween is undoubtedly a very atmospheric festival. A large swarm of bats in front of a huge, pale yellow moon, made from cardboard, paper and scatter decoration. If you want to make it together with children and have a large piece of cardboard, you can also make the moon huge and hang it on the wall. The bigger the bats, the easier it is to cut them out.
My inspiration for this came from memories of my trip to Australia: there the sky darkens every evening at the blue hour when night falls. A deafening screech accompanies the beating of the wings of countless flying foxes – huge bats. An incredible natural spectacle!
As always, you’ll find all the materials I used to make this craft on the materials list*. There really aren’t many!
As an alternative to the bats, you can also make a witch fly in front of the moon! Just make this witch in front of the full moon in a large format. You can also find lots of inspiration for other unusual Halloween ideas on Greatime.

How to Make the Halloween Bat Craft
Duration: about 1 hour (depending on how many bats you cut out)
1. How to Make the Moon
Place the lid of a cake container, your largest cake tin or a large plate as a template on the cardboard and go around it. The bigger the moon, the more bats there will be on it. An old moving box makes a great cardboard template.
Cut it out and paint the moon with yellow and white acrylic paint on both sides. I tried to indicate the moon craters with black acrylic paint.
Tip: You can stick a witch riding her broom on the back of the moon instead of the bats! This way you have two window pictures in one, when you turn it around. You can find the template for the witch in the tutorial for the witch card.
2. Print Out and Cut Out the Bats for teh Halloween Bat Craft
Download the bat templates and print out as many bats as you need in different sizes. Make sure that the large bats are an odd number, as this looks nicer when you arrange them on the full moon of the Halloween bat craft. You can also use nail scissors to cut out the small bats if you don’t have small craft scissors for filigree work.
Depending on the size of the moon, cut out 5-7 large batsNow glue the big bats onto the moon and fill the bat swarm with cut-out mini bats.
Tape white satin ribbon around the edge of the moon to cover the brown cardboard. Use the hole punch to punch a small hole in the top centre of the moon and thread a piece of white satin ribbon through it to hang the Halloween bat craft.
Have fun with this Halloween bat craft!
