You are planning the 3rd birthday party and looking for age-appropriate, short party games for 3 year olds? As the mother of two toddlers, I have gathered here the 10 party games that were the most fun at my children’s birthdays and those of their friends.
Three years old is a fantastic milestone; just look at the incredible development that has taken place in just one year. One of the biggest and most important developments is that three-year-olds begin to play with each other instead of just next to each other, and their social and motor skills have truly blossomed. While the first birthday marks the end of infancy and the second birthday shows many first social and motor skills, three-year-olds are more active, curious, and begin to explore their environment more intensively. For parents who want to organize a child-friendly and varied celebration, party games for 3 years olds are a great way to keep the child and little guests entertained, let them burn off energy, and create excitement. But which games are age-appropriate, won’t overwhelm the little ones, and are perfect for this special day? Here you will find my personal list of 10 party games that I collected for the 3rd birthday that both I and the children enjoyed the most.
Why Are Party Games Important for the 3rd Birthday?
Three-year-olds are in an exciting developmental phase. They are now able to understand and follow simple rules, improve their fine and gross motor skills, and learn basic social skills such as sharing and waiting. Games specifically suited to the third year of life promote these skills in a playful way and also provide a lot of fun.
In addition, playing together helps children build social bonds with others and strengthens their confidence in their own abilities. When selecting the right party games for 3 year olds, it’s important to make sure that the birthday games are age-appropriate. I recommend preparing at least one game where the children can burn off energy and move around a lot.
Preparation for the Birthday Party: What Is Needed for the Games?
Before you start looking for the best party games for 3 year olds, you should think about the party setup. This includes the following:
- The space: It’s important to have enough room for the games. A garden, large room, or playground is ideal. Make sure there’s enough space for movement.
- Decorations: Colorful and cheerful decorations are a must for children. Choose colors and motifs the birthday child loves. Balloons, garlands, or simple paper tablecloths are great options.
- Game stations: Set up different areas for the games. This way, the children can move from one station to the next, keeping things exciting.
The Best 10 Party Games for 3 Year Olds
Now, onto the games! Here are my children’s favorite games that promote motor skills and provide lots of fun. Depending on the weather, it’s important to have party games for both indoors (Games 5 – 10) and outdoors (Games 1 – 4). In case the weather doesn’t cooperate, you should definitely prepare some indoor party games as well.
As you might have noticed, I am a huge fan of treasure hunts and scavenger hunts. For the 3rd birthday party of my daughter, I prepared a treasure hunt as part of the program and was unsure whether I might overwhelm the kids with it. It was actually a real treasure hunt with a story and mission. For the children and my daughter, the search for the markers and the treasure, which was embedded in a story, was the most fun ever, and the five children didn’t need any help from us adults to find the treasure. Here, you’ll find two completely different suggestions for birthday treasure hunts for indoors and outdoors. The scavenger hunt for three-year-olds with a mission requires some preparation, while the second scavenger hunt is very quick to set up: you can find two complete scavenger hunts to print in our shop, or, of course, you can create a similar one yourself. 🙂
1. Treasure Hunt with a Mission
- Materials: Small treasures (e.g., candy, toys, stickers) or the bag with party favors, markers (ideally matching the story and mission)
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 30 minutes (for us, 30 minutes was almost too short)
What is the birthday child’s favorite animal? For a simple first treasure hunt, the favorite animal is a great theme. My daughter loves cats, so I chose the theme of kittens for the small treasure hunt. You can organize a small treasure hunt in the garden or in the surrounding area, where the children must search for clues that lead them to the treasure. These clues can be in the form of colorful pictures or path markers that guide the birthday child and their guests on their way to the “treasure”.
I printed and laminated about 50 paw prints and 6 cute kittens (5 children were invited, plus the birthday child), and cut them out. I attached colorful wiggly eyes to the kittens to make each one look a little different. The story and mission went like this: Bianca, my daughter’s white plush cat, became a mother, but overnight all five of her kittens ran away, and now she is sitting alone in her cat bed. She needs the children’s help to find her kittens! The way to the location where the laminated kittens and party favor bags were hidden was marked with the paw prints. I placed them in the grass, along the path, punched holes, and tied them to branches or tucked them under stones. The children eagerly searched for and collected the paw prints, and each child was allowed to choose one kitten to take home. The children ran almost the entire way and were very enthusiastic.
2. Roll and Move
- Materials: (Large) die, possibly a board or sheet with instructions for movements 1 – 6
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 or more
- Duration: 10 – 15 minutes
A great game for the 3rd birthday for younger children is a simple movement and dice game. The children take turns rolling the dice and must perform a specific movement according to the rolled number, such as “1 = jump,” “2 = crawl,” or “3 = spin.” The first to complete all movements from 1 to 6 wins.
Movements from 1 – 6
- 1: Jump up
- 2: Crawl forward
- 3: Spin around
- 4: Hop on one foot
- 5: Squat down
- 6: Crawl backward
3. Obstacle Course with a Crown
- Materials: Crown (made of cardboard or plastic), furniture, pillows, blankets, or other outdoor items like cones, benches, ropes
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors and Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: approximately 10 minutes
An obstacle course can be set up indoors or outdoors and is a great game where children can test their agility. Use furniture, pillows, blankets, and other safe objects to create a crawling, jumping, and running course indoors. For example, crawling under a table, jumping from pillow to pillow without stepping on the ground, or balancing on a line (e.g., a rope or ribbon on the floor).
Each child wears the crown and takes turns going through the obstacle course while being cheered on by the others. The goal is to keep the crown from falling off their head. This becomes more difficult as more jumping and crawling is involved!
4. Birthday Tag with a Surprise
- Materials: Transparent balloons, small gift, and tape
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: about 5 minutes per round
Young children love tag games. With a balloon and a little surprise, the classic tag becomes a creative game for a 3rd birthday. Here’s how it works:
Before inflating the balloons, place a small surprise in each one, such as a snack, a candy, or a small plastic figure. Transparent balloons work best so the children can see there is something inside. Tape a balloon to each child’s back. Then, the first child is “it” and tries to catch another child, while all the others run away. Once a child is caught, the “it” player takes their balloon, and the child without a balloon becomes “it.” The game continues until every child has been “it” and caught a balloon with a surprise.
5. Birthday Scavenger Hunt with Cards
- Materials: Rewards/small treasures, scavenger hunt cards, station cards
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 2 and up
- Duration: 10 – 20 minutes
Three-year-olds love games that involve searching and finding. This version of a treasure hunt for a 3rd birthday involves finding multiple station cards and checking them off on the game cards. You can find two complete printable scavenger hunts with everything you need in our shop as a download. Of course, you can also create a similar scavenger hunt on your own computer :-). Once all the items have been found, checked off, and the reward earned, the children are usually disappointed and want to play again. That’s how it was with us. That’s why you’ll find two complete scavenger hunts as a product in our shop, plus blank templates for more scavenger hunt rounds to design quickly yourself.
6. Birthday Bingo
- Materials: Bingo cards, draw cards with birthday motifs, markers (such as Smarties or glass stones)
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: about 5-10 minutes
Birthday Bingo is a simple, fun game for birthday parties or family gatherings that even 3-year-olds can enjoy. Here is a free PDF template with 5 Bingo cards and draw cards to download and print. You only need a printer, paper, and markers – ideally reusable ones like gummy bears, Smarties, or candies.
The rules are the same as classic Bingo: whoever gets five in a row first calls “Bingo” and wins.
Need more than 5 different Bingo cards? We also have a comprehensive Bingo card set available in our shop. It includes 30 Bingo cards, draw cards, a compact guide, and 5 sets of 70 markers in 5 colors.
7. Balloon Mikado
- Materials: Balloons in different colors, empty ball pit or kiddie pool
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: flexible
Balloon Mikado is a fun balloon game where the children have to overcome a challenge using colorful balloons. Fill a kiddie pool or an empty ball pit with inflated balloons until it’s full. Let the children take turns removing a balloon with their hands or feet without letting it or any other balloon fall out of the pool. No balloon is allowed to touch the ground. Then, the child throws the balloon into the air, and the other children try to catch it using a trick (e.g., with their feet).
8. Balloon Dance
- Materials: Balloons, music
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: flexible
For this 3rd birthday game, the children need a balloon and must dance in a circle to cheerful music without letting it fall to the ground. When the music stops, all the children must quickly throw the balloon into the air and catch it again. The child who drops the balloon first is out. The last child remaining wins.
Here you can find more fun balloon games.
9. Musical Chairs Party Game for 3 Year Olds
- Materials: Music, possibly a list with tasks as a reminder
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 3 and up
- Duration: about 10 minutes
A fun game for a 3rd birthday is “Musical Chairs,” but without the chairs! Instead, the children must perform different creative tasks when the music stops. For example, “jump like a bunny” or “crawl like a bear.”
In this game, the children dance in a circle. When the music stops, they must perform the assigned task. Be sure to come up with at least 10 tasks ahead of time! The tasks should be simple and encourage movement and fun. Here are some examples of tasks that could be given during the game:
- Dance like an animal: The children choose an animal and imitate its movement (e.g., jump like a frog, slither like a snake, or waddle like a penguin).
- Hop on one foot: The children must hop on one foot until the music starts again.
- Run in a circle: Run or spin in a small circle or a specific direction.
- Clap your hands: All children must clap their hands at the same time.
- Jump as high as you can: The children must jump as high as they can.
- Do the splits: If possible, children must do the splits (adjusted to age and flexibility).
- Laugh loudly: All children must laugh loudly.
- Crawl like a baby: Crawl on all fours.
- Stand like a tree: The children must pose like a tree with arms stretched out like branches.
- Run to the next point: All children must run to a designated point in the room.
- Fly like a bird: The children pretend to be birds and fly around the room.
- Form a snake: The children form a snake and line up behind each other.
- Sit down and spin: The children sit on the floor and spin in circles.
- Do a somersault: Whoever can, does a somersault.
- Shout your favorite sound: The children shout a funny sound or animal noise of their choice.
Depending on the space available, the tasks can be adapted. The most important thing is that the tasks are fun for the children and allow them to move around a lot.
10. Pot-Hitting Game
- Materials: Pot, wooden spoon, blindfold, small gifts or sweets
- Age: 2 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of Players: 2 and up
- Duration: maximum 5 minutes per child
Pot-hitting is a classic game that is still very popular with children. It is simple, fun, and promotes the senses, especially hearing and orientation. Here’s how it works:
A child is chosen to play “Pot-Hitting.” They are either blindfolded with a cloth or a blindfold. This increases the challenge because the child can’t see the pot. The child receives a spoon or another object with which they must try to find the pot and hit it. The other children stand in a circle or nearby and give loud instructions such as “hotter” (when the child is near the pot) or “colder” (when the child moves away from the pot). They cannot give direct hints about the pot itself, only general directions. The child must move through the room and try to find the pot by hitting the floor with the spoon. Once they find the pot, they should hit it. When the child hits the pot, it is picked up, and the hidden gift or candy underneath is revealed. The child may keep the gift or candy. The next child is chosen, and the game repeats.
