My daughter loves unicorns and her cousin has adored and worshipped the magical animals since she was born. So it was only a matter of time before we had a unicorn party. I thought it was great because I grew up with wonderful themed birthdays, which were the highlight of the year not only for me but also for my friends.

With themed children’s birthday parties, the theme dictates a lot – decorations, food and drink and program items. I can only advise from experience: keep the program short and prepare less! This is especially true for children’s birthday parties for toddlers from the age of 3. From the age of 6, you can put together a great program with a unicorn treasure hunt or several small games or handicrafts, before that I would advise against an extensive program.

Personally, I like it best when the children make or play with the gifts themselves at the children’s birthday party – for example as treasure in a unicorn scavenger hunt. This way you can combine the program and the “main gift” in one go, the kids take home something unique and you save money.

1. Preparation and Checklist

I swear by to-do lists and structured planning when a children’s birthday party is coming up. And that’s where I start by answering the W questions. To help you, I’ve listed my W questions for the unicorn birthday  party here, maybe my approach is something for you too. This list is the framework that I fill with ideas and then move on to the next step of preparation and implementation.

These questions need to be answered for the unicorn children’s birthday party:

1. How many children are coming?
2. How many adults do I need to supervise and who?
3. Who needs a costume?
4. Where does the unicorn party take place? At home or outside? Is there a treasure hunt to a specific location?
5. When does it take place and how long should the children’s birthday party last?
6. What program is planned? Several small unicorn games, handicrafts or a big unicorn scavenger hunt?
7. What accessories do I need for the program?
8. How much time do I have for the program, i.e. games, craft projects & free play (especially with small children)?
9. What to eat and drink to match the unicorn theme?
10. What gifts should there be?

2. Invitation to the Unicorn Birthday Party

Make the invitation to the unicorn  birthday party together with your child! In addition to the important information about when and where the birthday party starts and ends, it should be clear that it is a unicorn-themed party. Write on the invitation if the children should bring accessories, e.g. for a planned unicorn treasure hunt or a dress-up game.

• Cut out unicorn heads, label them and have the child color in a rainbow-colored mane and a glitter horn on the front
• Write the invitation text with a glitter pen

Girls in particular (but not only) love dressing up. To make the unicorn birthday party really magical, you can ask the children to come dressed up as a magical creature (elf, mythical creature, princess) on the invitation card. You can also ask the parents in advance for suitable costumes and offer a fund with which the children can dress up at the children’s birthday party.

If your child is not so keen on dressing up or is already 8 years or older, you can simply buy unicorn headbands for all the girls who wear them – as long as there are no or hardly any boys around.

Hand on heart – which unicorn-loving girl doesn’t dream of having her own unicorn? If your child already has a big or small favorite plush unicorn, then you can use this animal wonderfully! The story: The birthday girl’s unicorn has gone missing. Your mission: find it again! You can design the search game as a fun scavenger hunt or a simple treasure hunt in which the unicorn leaves messages for the children until they finally find it. If the unicorn is a mare, perhaps she has run away to give birth to her unicorn foals in a secret place that only unicorns know? As a surprise, the children not only find the birthday boy’s unicorn, but also a little unicorn foal for each child :-).

For a successful children’s birthday party, it is essential that the program is age-appropriate. For children aged 5-6, I recommend preparing a maximum of 3 unicorn games and still allowing time for the children to play freely. From the age of 6, children will really enjoy a bigger treasure hunt.

7. Unicorn Games and Scavenger Hunt

5 Indoor Unicorn Games for Younger Children (From 4 Years Old)

1. Unicorn hunt: You hide little unicorns made of plush or plastic for the children to find. The game is over when every child has a unicorn.
2. Diamond potholing: Each child can, if they wish, put on a unicorn hairband and one, be blindfolded and get down on all fours. They are then given a wooden spoon and play pot knocking. There are magical diamonds in the pot that need to be found.
3. Create a unicorn: Cut out a large unicorn from cardboard for this game – the bigger the better! Hang it up on the wall and provide paints and brushes, colorful tape, paper and anything else you can think of. The children decorate the unicorn together. Then it’s a great decoration for the children’s room.
4. Unicorn make-up: All children can put on unicorn make-up. Young children up to the age of 6 can do their make-up for adults.
5. Unicorn dance: All the unicorns beat their hooves and dance wildly. As soon as the music stops, their hooves have to stand still too. If a hoof twitches, the little unicorn leaves the dance floor and watches the others. The last unicorn wins.

Unicorn Scavenger Hunt for Children Aged 7+

• For the unicorn scavenger hunt, an adult can play the last unicorn. It is particularly funny if he or she slips into a unicorn costume. The adult is given tasks and clues and scraps of paper or chalk to mark the way. The children try to find and catch the last unicorn. • A unicorn treasure hunt is all about finding a treasure at the end. The absolute highlight of our unicorn birthday party was when the children found the unicorn foals at the end of the treasure hunt and each child had their own unicorn to take home. The story was simple – my daughter’s unicorn Penny had gone missing and the children’s mission was to find her and find out why she had run away. The big surprise was the unicorn foals and that Penny had become a mom :-). As my daughter is still small, we did a simple treasure hunt with the route marked with arrows. We adults went along with the children.

Escape games for at home are a real detective game tip for older children and adults! Although you can only play each game once (logically, after that you know the solutions), they cost from around 10 euros and are something relatively new.

Games or crafts – which is more fun for the birthday child? If your child prefers arts and crafts and is creative, then you can do without games and prepare a creative unicorn children’s birthday party. The children can make unicorns and beautiful unicorn objects.

• Craft and decorate horns using pointed cups and elastic bands to attach to the head. Each child decorates their horn with fabric flowers, glitter and paint
