Tastes deliciously oriental, saves time and everyone can use it – this vegan couscous in a jar makes an excellent gift. It not only tastes great, but also looks great!
Aromatic, hearty and exotic with dried apricots, cranberries and tomatoes, crunchy roasted nuts and spices. This couscous mix in a jar is vegan and my alternative this year to the homemade boletus risotto mix in a jar. This year, unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the forest often enough to dry enough mushrooms. Now I’m curious to see if the couscous mixture in a jar goes down as well with the recipients as my porcini classic. The idea was inspired by a recipe in a cookery guidebook – I changed it to my taste and spiced it up more.
Baking and cooking mixes in a jar are super convenient and save preparation time. They make a really quick gift, because the couscous mixture in the jar is also quick to mix yourself. If you also like to make things and enjoy decorating them, it’s not just the giving that’s fun. In the instructions you will find my designed label with preparation for download.

The Vegan Oriental Couscous in a Jar

Mix ingredients and create jar: 15 minutes + the time you need to create the label.
A quick gift idea at Christmas or as a take-home gift all year round. You can easily design the jar with washi tape, ribbons, bows, a doily over the lid to match the season or occasion.
Designing a Jar and Pendant

For the jar, you can use an empty cucumber jar. It must be large enough to hold 500 ml. Alternatively, there are nice 500 ml preserving bottles and bulbous preserving jars from Weck – you’re sure to find them on amazon* at the latest 😉
With inexpensive jars, make sure that they are solidly made and that they close really well so that no moisture or air gets to the ingredients and they stay fresh.
Materials*
- Jar (500 ml), wake juice bottle or 500 ml canning jar e.g. also an empty old pickle jar
- Gift wrapping paper with a motif to match the occasion
- Contour scissors
- White raffia ribbon
- Baker’s twine
- The label
- Sticker to cover the glue line (Paper Poetry Puristic Christmas)
- Punch pliers
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Hot glue gun
- Permanent marker for labelling
- If necessary, greaseproof paper
You don’t need to decorate the jars, they look nice as they are. I covered the printed lid of my old cucumber jar with wrapping paper that I cut into shape with a pair of contour scissors. Simply place the lid on the unprinted side of the wrapping paper and outline it with a pencil. Then leave a margin of about 1 cm and cut out the shape with the contour scissors and glue it to the lid with the hot glue gun.
To match the occasion of the gift (for me it was Christmas, as you can see), I wrapped the jar several times with white raffia ribbon and fixed it at the back with the hot glue gun. I let the glue disappear under a beautiful sticker from Paper Poetry.
Punch the pendant with the cooking instructions with the hole punch, fold it and tie it to the jar with bakers twine.
Ingredients and Instructions How to Mix the Couscous in the Jar

First fill the couscous into the jar. Cut the dried tomatoes and apricots into strips and layer them on top of the couscous one by one. Roast the flaked almonds and cashews without fat in a pan, allow to cool and place on top. Layer the cranberries on top. Cut the cinnamon stick in half and place on top. Crush the peppercorns in a mortar and sprinkle on top mixed with the sea salt and parsley.
Tip: Tap the jar on the table a few times after each layer so that the layer of ingredients is compacted and lies “nicely”. To prevent the layers from mixing, the glass must be filled to the top. If this is not the case, simply crumple the sandwich paper and fill it on top. Screw the jar shut.
