Harry Potter Halloween Party – 7 Fantastic Ideas for a Magical Feast

Harry Potter Halloween Party 7 Fantastic Ideas For A Magical FeastThe festival of ghosts and spirits has always been celebrated at Hogwarts and plays an important role in the Harry Potter saga. For Potter fans of all ages, here are some tips on how to spend a magnificent Harry Potter Halloween Party!

Polyjuice Potion, Nearly Headless Nick and Aragog sound familiar to your ears? You instinctively associate “flea powder” with fireplaces, you know what your Patronus is and in everyday life, in certain situations, words like “Alohomora”, “Expelliarmus” or “Wingardium Leviosa” spontaneously come to mind that you would like to pronounce immediately?

Yes, then you are also a Potterian and live like a Muggle among Muggles, but we both know exactly: you are a witch or a wizard at heart, just like the students of Hogwarts.

And that means there’s a good chance you’re one of those people who love and celebrate Halloween. Because apart from the fact that ghosts and ghouls, witches and talking pumpkins are extremely magical, and that the Halloween festival is a good opportunity to dress up properly again – in wizard and witch robes, of course – without the ignorant Muggle world looking at you funny, this festival plays a very important role in the saga of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Halloween is not only the memorable day on which the three become friends after Harry and Ron save Hermione from the out-of-control troll. A whole host of other fateful events in the narrative also take place on that very day, both tragic and joyous: starting with the murder of Harry’s parents by Lord Vol… (You-Know-Who), although this day is also, of course, Harry’s mysterious first victory over him.

But also the Chamber of Secrets opens (for the second time) on Halloween, Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts and Harry Potter is chosen by the Goblet of Fire as champion for the Triwizard Tournament…

By Merlin’s Beard! If that’s not enough reasons to celebrate this Harry Potter Halloween Party with his friends…?.

We have 7 tips for just that (any other number would have felt wrong)!

Harry Potter Halloween Party – 7 Ideas for a Magical Feast

Halloween involves imaginative dressing up, as well as tasty nibbles, Halloween-themed decorations and perhaps a Halloween game or two. For real witches and wizards, of course, it’s child’s play to conjure all this up with a casual flick of the wrist: “Accio pumpkin pie! Accio skeleton garland! Accio…”

What, your invocation spells are still a bit bumpy? Well, we’ll give you a few tips on how to get everything you need, Muggle-style.

1. Polyjuice Potion & Co – How to Transform Yourself for Halloween

Perhaps there are some among you who are lucky enough to be an Animagus and you can take animal form at any time. In that case: congratulations, your Halloween costume is fixed!

Everyone else should remember to make Polyjuice Potion in time (remember: it takes a month!) or take lessons in Transfiguration from Professor Mc Gonagall. Or, alternatively, get costumes the Muggle way 😉

It’s a good thing that you can find them on this strange internet, e.g. Amazon* has all kinds of Harry Potter & Co costume stuff:

Little warning on the side: We strongly advise anyone who wants to go as you-know-who for Halloween not to attempt to witch their nose away!

2. Bertie Botts Beans of Every Flavour and Other Treats

Next to dressing up, sweets probably play the second main role at Halloween. Fittingly, the Wizarding World of the Potterverse is teeming with magical nibbles and special foods. There are Bertie Botts’ beans of every(!) flavour, which always give you the jitters, lest you get a cod liver oil-flavoured jelly bean or worse.

Then, of course, there are the lively jumping chocolate frogs, liquorice wands, Druhbel’s best bubble gum and many other treats.

Conveniently, there are also Muggle editions of these sweets, e.g. here:

For other delicacies from the Potterverse, recipes from fans can also be found online, such as pumpkin pies (go doubly well with your Harry Potter halloween Party), butterbeer (alcohol-free, child-friendly recipe) or kettle pie.

3. Little Triwizard Tournament

A Harry Potter character with a broom stands on one of the novels as if ready to fly off at any moment and fight out a trimgaic tournament.
Harry’s supreme discipline is flying on a broomstick

Harry’s supreme discipline is flying on a broomThe Goblet of Fire’s selection of champions for the Triwizard Tournament, like so many other main events in the book and film series, takes place on none other than 31 October: Halloween!

An ideal occasion to hold a Harry Potter Halloween Party. However, you’d better refrain from lengthy underwater rescues, dragon fights and the days-long construction of a labyrinth full of traps. (Not to mention unplanned portkey transports to Tom Riddle’s grave…. No, no, no!)

Instead, you should choose suitable Halloween games as disciplines. Depending on who you are celebrating your Harry Potter Halloween party, you can get inspiration and ideas for Halloween games for children, Halloween games for teenagers or Halloween games for adults.

Alternatively, of course, you can invent your own magical tournament disciplines, or fall back on Harry Potter games.

4. Pumpkin Juice and Other (Magic) Potions

In the Harry Potter novels, the students of Hogwarts drink pumpkin juice quite often (and not only at Halloween), but the so-called butterbeer is also a popular drink, although it is never quite clear whether it has an intoxicating effect or not. So here are two recipe recommendations: Butterbeer for children and Butterbeer for adults.
Apart from that, potions of course play a major role, not only as a school subject for Professor Snape and Professor Slughorn, but also for the plot.

Several times Harry, Ron and Hermione use the aforementioned Polyjuice Potion to specifically take on the appearance of certain people and thus disguise themselves. Apart from the fact that the preparation is supposed to be complicated and takes 1 month, there is another small, rather unappetising detail: the potion has to be mixed with a piece of the person you want to turn into, e.g. hair. Other ingredients, according to the book, include lacewings and leeches. For ordinary Halloween guests, therefore, a modified version is more suitable…

Apart from that, other potions from the Potterverse sound much more tempting anyway and even more suitable for parties: for example, the Chattering Potion, the Elixir of Euphoria and the Spark Solution. Caution and responsibility are advised with all magic potions, but especially with the ultra-strong love potion Amortentia and the golden brew Felix Felicis, “happiness in liquid form”.

Be sure to chill (or warm) some of these potions for your Harry Potter Halloween party. Either get creative yourself in mixing or relabelling them, or take a cue from other Potter fans’ recipes, e.g. those by Yum Tam Tam for Polyjuice Potion and Felix Felicis:

5. “Melodia samhainii commence!”

By the way, I came up with this spell myself! It instantly makes a room magically resound with sounds that are appropriate for Halloween. You’ll have to practise for a while to get it right, though. In the meantime, you can also play Muggle-style music or just atmospheric sounds, like this one:

You can find more alternatives on YouTube, such as the following mix, which provides a whole 7 (!) hours of Halloween Harry Potter atmosphere!

If this is too monotonous for you in the long run, you would be well advised to play some real music in between. Of course, the leitmotif of the Harry Potter film soundtracks should not be missing. Here, therefore, is a best off of the film music:

6.The Almost Headless Nick and Other Ghosts

Halloween is also a festival of ghosts and ghouls and so the house ghosts of Hogwarts must not be missing from a Harry Potter Halloween Party: the Almost Headless Nick for Gryffindor, Ravenclaw’s Grey Lady, the Fat Monk of Hufflepuff and last but not least Slytherin’s terrifying Bloody Baron.

There are, of course, other ghosts at Hogwarts, such as the somewhat doddering ghost teacher Cuthbert Binns, about whom the students are not quite sure whether he even knows he is dead, the horribly howling Moaning Myrtle and, last but not least, the poltergeist Peeves, the epitome of the mischievous mischief-maker!
If this Who is who? of Hogwarts ghosts is not on the guest list anyway, you can also ensure their presence in other ways, e.g. with ghost decorations that represent the ghosts. Either get creative yourself or modify ready-made ghost decorations to suit Harry Potter. Some ghosts from the Potterverse, such as the Bloody Baron, can even be bought as figurines:

7. Deathly Hallows or “Deathly Hallows”

The symbol of the "Deathly Hallows" from Harry Potter
The mystical symbol of the Deathly Hallows

Have you ever noticed that the original English title of the final seventh volume somehow sounds like Halloween? That’s because Halloween also goes back to the rather old English word “hallow”. The name “Deathly Hallows”, translated into German as “Heiligtümer der Todes”, is also quite unusual in English.

Did J. K. Rowling possibly want to give a hint to the central meaning of Halloween, All Hallows’ Eve, i.e. the evening before All Saints’ Day? Considering how often central events in the books take place exactly on this date, there are good reasons to think so.

So here’s my suggestion: when decorating for your Halloween at Hogwarts, put the symbol of the Deathly Hallows in one place or another. Also place objects representing the Deathly Hallows as decorations: the Dueling Wand, the Stone that brings the dead back to life and the Invisibility Cloak.
