The birthday party is a highlight of the year in every child’s life, and especially for 4-year-olds, the celebration should be an adventure full of fun and games. But planning can be challenging: Which party games for 4-year-olds are best to keep the little guests entertained, ensuring they’re neither over- nor under-challenged, while also ensuring ultimate fun and good mood?
As a mom of two toddlers, I quickly realized: some classic games that I loved as a child are still among the most beloved birthday games for kids. They also love search-and-find games, and simple treasure hunts and scavenger hunts are very popular. At 4 years old, children are especially curious and full of energy, so games that spark their imagination while also promoting their motor and social skills are very well received. My daughter is always daydreaming, experiencing wild adventures with her parachute—and creative games that fuel her imagination made our 4th birthday party a big hit, bringing glowing eyes and generating plenty of noise.
In this article, you’ll find 20 creative, entertaining, and age-appropriate games—10 for indoors and 10 for outdoors. Some classics are a must, just like creative games. This way, the party will be a success whether the weather is bad or good!
Why are Party Games for 4-Year-Olds so Important?
At the age of 4, children are in an important developmental phase. They are expanding their vocabulary, learning to understand social interactions, and deepening their skills in areas like coordination, memory, and problem-solving. For children of this age, play is not only a form of entertainment but also a method for developing cognitive and social skills. Whether through movement, dexterity, or creativity, the right game not only supports fun but also fosters the children’s motor, linguistic, and social skills.
The Best Party Games for a 4-Year-Old’s Birthday Party
Here you’ll find a selection of creative birthday games that are perfect for 4-year-olds. They’re easy to implement and guarantee lots of joy and laughter. Is your child quiet or lively and energetic? Does your child, like mine, have a colorful imagination or is always on the move? Consider their personality and what excites and engages them most when selecting games for your child’s birthday party.
Even if you plan everything and are an organizational genius, one thing cannot be controlled: the weather! The good news is that there are fantastic party games for 4-year-olds both indoors and outdoors. Here are my top 10 indoor and 10 outdoor game favorites. Among them, you’ll find several ideas for age-appropriate scavenger hunts and treasure hunts for 4-year-olds, as I’m a huge fan of treasure hunts.
10 Party Games for 4-Year-Olds – Indoors
It’s gray and rainy, and the party must take place indoors? Don’t worry, there are plenty of great party games for a 4th birthday indoors.
1. Birthday Scavenger Hunt – The Search for the 3 Crowns
- Materials: Rewards / small treasures, scavenger hunt cards, station cards
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 20 minutes
In this simple birthday scavenger hunt for 4-year-olds, the goal is to search and find without puzzles—this would overwhelm the kids since they can’t read yet. Age-appropriate, the goal is to find birthday items and three birthday crowns and check them off on the game cards. In our shop, we offer two scavenger hunt printables, which contain everything you need. One version has only pictures, and the other includes the item names for children who can already read. Of course, you can also easily design your own scavenger hunt on your computer. Once all items are found, checked off, and the reward is earned, the kids are usually disappointed and want to play another round—this happens every time with us. That’s why we offer two complete scavenger hunts in one product, plus blank templates that allow you to quickly create more scavenger hunt rounds.
2. Colorful Treasure Hunt – Crack the Color Code
- Materials: 10-15 colored objects, rewards
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 20 minutes
Conduct a treasure hunt where the kids must find specific colored objects. Each child receives a list (or you can create game cards) with colors and objects they need to find. I printed the objects in black and white, and the kids should color them in the corresponding color. This promotes color recognition and is an exciting and creative activity. For an added challenge, you could make the final treasure hunt solution a color code, derived from a sequence of the colored objects the kids find and color in. If there are not only 3- and 4-year-olds playing together but also older children, this is an easy way to increase the difficulty level.
3. Birthday Bingo
- Materials: Bingo cards, draw cards with birthday motifs, markers (e.g., Smarties or glass stones)
- Age: 3 – 8 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 3 or more
- Duration: 5-10 minutes
Birthday Bingo is a great game for birthday parties where especially children of different ages will have fun. You can download a free PDF template that includes 5 Bingo cards and draw cards to print. You only need a printer, paper, and markers – preferably markers that can be reused for several rounds, such as gummy bears, Smarties, or candies. The rules are the same as classic Bingo: the first one to mark 5 fields in a row calls “Bingo” and wins. If you need more than 5 Bingo cards, we also offer an extensive Birthday Bingo game in our shop. It includes 30 Bingo cards, draw cards, a compact guide, and 5 sets of 70 markers in 5 different colors.
4. Dress-Up Game
- Materials: Costumes, dress-up items, rewards
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 4 or more
- Duration: 10 – 20 minutes
Fill a box with costumes that help children embody their favorite animals or characters. This could be an animal costume or a superhero cape. Each child then has the task of giving a short “performance” as the animal or character they embody: How does the animal move? What noises does it make? What is typical of the superhero? After each performance, all the children receive a small reward. Missing costumes? You could ask the parents of the invited children to bring costumes that the birthday child has. As a special extra, you can also do makeup for all the kids! It’s worth investing in good theater makeup that is easy to wash off. You’ll find tutorials on YouTube for nearly all the favorite animals and heroes of the children.
5. Creative Cooking With Playdough
- Materials: Colored playdough, playdough tools for fruits, vegetables, burgers, cakes, etc.
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 30 minutes
Since my daughter received a Play-Doh oven for her 3rd birthday to create all sorts of dishes, she can knead for hours with her friends. Sorry, I mean cook. Offer a station where kids can create their own dishes and meals from playdough. For example, they can make fruit or vegetable skewers, build burgers, or “bake” their own birthday cake. There’s no limit to creativity here, and investing in playdough accessories is really worth it.
6. Burst Balloons and Other Balloon Games
- Materials: Balloons, candies, confetti, or small toys
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 4 or more
- Duration: 5 – 10 minutes
Before the game starts, blow up several balloons and fill them with small surprises, such as confetti in different colors, candies, or small toys. Each balloon contains one of these small surprises. The children must pop the balloons. At the end, when all the balloons have burst, all the prizes are fairly distributed among the children. This game promotes hand-eye coordination and is especially fun for kids.

7. Musical Chairs With Creative Tasks
- Materials: Music, optional task list for guidance
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 3 or more
- Duration: approx. 10 minutes
A fun birthday game for 4-year-olds is “Musical Chairs” – but without chairs! Instead, the children must complete creative tasks whenever the music stops. For example, “jump like a bunny” or “crawl like a bear.” The children dance in a circle, and when the music stops, they perform the given task. It’s important to come up with at least 10 simple tasks in advance to keep the fun going. The tasks should be simple and appropriate for the children so that the fun factor is not lost. Vary the movements to surprise and make the kids laugh!
- Jump like a frog
- Dance like a cowboy or cowgirl
- Crawl like a bear
- Spin around in a circle
- Hop on one foot
- Run like a tiger
- Walk like a penguin
- Fly like a bird
- Waddle like a duckling
- Crawl like a kitten
- Spread your arms like wings and fly
- Stomp like an elephant
- Laugh like a clown
- Hop like a kangaroo
- Swing like a monkey
8. Dice and Movement Game
- Materials: (Preferably large) dice, optional task list for movements 1-6 as a reminder
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors (and Outdoors)
- Number of players: 3 or more
- Duration: 10 – 15 minutes
For this simple and fun movement game, you only need a die. Ideally, use a large foam die, which can be bought for a small price. The children take turns rolling the die and must perform a specific movement depending on the number they roll, for example, “1 = jump,” “2 = crawl,” or “3 = spin.” The first player to complete all movements from 1 to 6 wins the game.
Suggested movements for 1 – 6:
- 1: Jump high
- 2: Crawl
- 3: Spin around
- 4: Balance on one foot
- 5: Squat down
- 6: Sit down and get back up
9. Hit the Pot
- Materials: Pot, wooden spoon, blindfold, small gifts or candies
- Age: 2 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: max. 5 minutes per child
Hit the pot is one of the classic birthday games. In this game, children must find a pot with their eyes closed, under which a reward is hidden. Blindfold the first child, place an object (toy or candy) under the pot, and position it away from the child. They must find the pot with a spoon while the other children, who are in a circle, give clues like “hotter” or “colder” depending on whether they’re getting closer (hotter) or farther away (colder) from the pot. The child hits the ground with the spoon to find the pot. Once the pot is hit, the hidden gift or candy is revealed and can be kept by the child. Afterward, the next child takes a turn.
10. Freeze Dance
- Materials: Music
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Indoors
- Number of players: 4 or more
- Duration: about 10 minutes
Freeze dance is another classic that kids love just as much today as they did 30 years ago. In freeze dance, the children dance to music, and when the music stops, they must freeze in the position they are in. Anyone who moves is out. It’s lots of fun.
10 Outdoor Party Games for the 4th Birthday
If the weather is nice, there are many great outdoor games that promote even more movement. Some of the indoor party games for 4-year-olds can also be played outside if the party is held in the garden. But here are 10 games that are perfect for playing outdoors:
1. Treasure Hunt With or Without a Theme
- Materials: Small treasures (e.g., candies, toys, stickers) or party favors bags, markers (ideally matching the story or mission)
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of players: 3 or more
- Duration: 15 – 45 minutes
Nowadays, for many children and parents, a treasure hunt is a must at any birthday party – and you can do a treasure hunt indoors or outdoors. For outdoors, I recommend a simple scavenger hunt where children look for markers that indicate where to go next. At the end, they find the treasure. Simple riddles can overwhelm 4-year-olds, and they will need an adult to read them out. It’s much more fun for the children if they can complete the treasure hunt on their own, with adults only guiding them. The easiest way is to use sidewalk chalk and mark the path with arrows to the treasure. If you are hosting a themed birthday party or want to make the treasure hunt special, you can get creative. For example, I’ve printed animal paw prints, laminated them, and used them as weatherproof markers, or used colorful ribbons as markers.
2. Giant Puzzle Search
- Materials: Large photo or picture (giant puzzles are also available for purchase, such as from Petterson and Findus)
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 20 minutes
Create a large puzzle by cutting a photo or picture into large pieces. Hide these pieces in the garden. The children must then find the individual pieces and put the puzzle together. You can choose a theme that the children like, such as animals or vehicles.
3. Gold and Gemstone Hunt
- Materials: Plastic gemstones, glass nuggets, chocolate gold coins, etc., shovels, sieves
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of players: 2 or more
- Duration: about 10 minutes
Fill a sandbox or large container with sand and bury plastic gemstones, chocolate gold coins, play money, etc. as treasure. The children must dig, sift, and search for the treasures.

4. Color Fishing
- Material: Tub or paddling pool, various colored objects, fishing nets
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 2 or more
- Duration: 5 – 15 minutes
For this game, you need a large tub or paddling pool where you submerge various colored balls or objects. Each child tries to catch as many different colors as possible using a small fishing net. This game is ideal for promoting fine motor skills and color recognition in children.
5. Obstacle Course
- Material: Outdoor items like cones, benches, ropes
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 30 minutes
An obstacle course is a great way to physically challenge children while also training their coordination and agility. For the course, you can use garden furniture, brooms, ropes, or anything else that suits. To complete the various stations, children must use different skills like jumping through a hula-hoop, balancing on a rope, or crawling under tables. Make sure the stations are simple enough so all children can complete them without frustration. The goal is to complete the course as quickly as possible.
6. Water Balloon Fight
- Material: Filled water balloons
- Age: 3 – 99 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 4 or more
- Duration: 10 minutes or more
For birthday parties on hot days, a water balloon fight is a great game. Make sure to prepare enough water balloons and explain to the children that they can only throw water balloons. This ensures lots of fun and a refreshing cool-down.
Here you can find more water games and water balloon games for kids, some of which are also suitable for 4-year-olds.
7. Throwing Sponges
- Material: Buckets, sponges, chalk spray or rope to mark the target line
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 or more
- Duration: 5 – 10 minutes
Cut large sponges into different sizes and set up buckets at various distances. The children form two teams and must dip the sponges in water and throw them into the buckets. Whoever lands a sponge in a bucket scores a point for their team and receives appropriate applause. At the end, the teams count their points, and the team with the most points wins. Both teams receive the same prizes. This game promotes accuracy and is perfect for hot days.
8. Catching Fish
- Material: Paper fish, paper clips, string, magnets, hot glue gun, small prizes
- Age: 3 – 6 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 2 or more
- Duration: 10 – 30 minutes
Make a fishing rod for each child by tying a magnet to a piece of string and securing it with a hot glue gun to ensure it doesn’t slip out. Cut paper fish (or fold them as origami fish), attach 3-4 paper clips to each fish, and write a small prize on each one. At the party, fill a small paddling pool or tub with water and place the paper fish with the paper clips inside. The children can then use their magnetic fishing rods to catch fish. Once a child catches a fish and pulls it out of the water, you read the prize aloud, and the child receives it. This is a fun, relaxing activity that requires concentration and patience.
9. Egg and Spoon Race
- Material: Large spoon, egg or ball
- Age: 3 – 8 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 or more
- Duration: 5 minutes, depending on the number of participants
The egg and spoon race has been one of the most popular party games for 4-year-olds for decades. In this age-appropriate version without a competitive edge, children must balance an egg (or an alternative like a ball) on a spoon from the starting point to the finish line. The goal is to get the egg to the finish line without dropping it. This is a great game for improving hand-eye coordination and creates lots of laughs when the egg falls.
10. Target Throwing
- Material: Basket or bucket or small goal or basketball hoop, various throwing objects like balls, rings, cones, rewards for 3 successful throws
- Age: 4 – 8 years
- Location: Outdoors
- Number of Players: 3 or more
- Duration: 10 – 30 minutes
Prepare various throwing objects like balls, rings, or cones and have the children try to throw them into a target. You can mark the target on the ground with chalk or use a bucket, goal, or hoop. The children can play in teams or each try to score as many successful throws as possible. Once a child lands 3 successful throws, they receive a small prize, like a ball. This game promotes hand-eye coordination and accuracy.
Creative party games for 4-year-olds can stimulate their imagination and transport them into a world full of fun and discovery. The ideas mentioned above not only provide entertainment but also foster the children’s social, motor, and creative skills. Make sure the games are tailored to the children’s interests, and enjoy an unforgettable birthday party!
