The forest is a fascinating place full of secrets and adventure. For children and adults alike, it offers an ideal backdrop for discovering nature through play, sharpening the senses and experiencing community. In this article, we present 24 different forest games that allow you to experience the forest in previously unknown ways.
Whether for an excursion with the school class, a birthday party in the countryside or a cozy family afternoon – forest games can be used in a variety of ways and adapted to individual needs. It doesn’t matter whether a large group is involved or just two or three people: With a little creativity, any forest setting can be transformed into a natural playing field. The special atmosphere of the forest with its scents, sounds and lighting moods makes every forest game an intense nature experience that will be remembered.
Forest games combine exercise in the fresh air with experiences for all the senses. They offer a welcome change from everyday life and at the same time promote important skills such as team spirit, concentration, motor skills and environmental awareness. Children in particular benefit from being able to playfully explore their environment – without the pressure to perform, but with lots of fun. But adults can also switch off in the forest, recharge their batteries and discover new perspectives – whether by solving a task together, creatively designing with natural materials or simply by consciously experiencing their surroundings.
Below we present 24 forest games – 12 for children and 12 for adults. Some are particularly suitable for groups, while others are great for playing as a couple or with the family. Whether you like it creative or sporty, quiet or adventurous: there is something for every age group and every mood.
Forest Games for Children – Exploring and Understanding Nature Through Play
Children love to play outside – and the forest is an ideal place for this. It offers countless opportunities to run around, be amazed, learn and experience. With simple means and a little imagination, creative play ideas can be created here that promote both movement and the senses.
Below you will find twelve varied forest games for children that are both educational and entertaining. All of them are also easy to implement and guaranteed fun.
1. Leaf Catching – Reaction Game With an Autumnal Swirl
A quick game for the fall that gets everyone moving. One child throws a dry leaf into the air and everyone else tries to catch it before it hits the ground. Whoever succeeds is next in line to throw a leaf. This game sharpens reaction skills and makes for lots of laughter.
2. Forest Bingo – On a Discovery Tour With the Nature Map

3. Cone Target Throw – Who Hits the Best?
A simple competition with pine cones: the children try to throw their cones from a set distance into a bucket, hoop or marked circle. The throwing distance or the target can be adjusted according to age. Who hits the best? This game promotes coordination and accuracy.
4. Hugging Trees – A Game for Trust and the Senses

This game promotes trust, mindfulness and the sensory experience of nature.
5. Giant Tree and Dwarf – An Imaginative Game of Catch
An imaginative movement game: one child is the “giant tree”, who is only allowed to move slowly. All the others are “forest dwarves” who run around the giant and tease him. If the giant tree touches a dwarf, the dwarf also becomes a giant. The game continues until everyone has been caught. Ideal for letting off steam!
6. Sound Memory – Listen, Guess and Imitate
The children close their eyes while one child makes a sound with natural materials – e.g. two stones hitting each other, stepping on leaves or shaking a branch. The others then have to find out what the sound was and imitate it. A great exercise for hearing and attention.
7. Leaf Detectives – Discover Plant Knowledge Through Play

8. Laying a Forest Mandala – Creative Game With Natural Materials

9. Animal Tracks Rally – On the Tracks of Forest Dwellers
Prepare small cards with photos or drawings of animal tracks (e.g. deer, fox, wild boar, hare) in advance. The children are given the task of discovering similar tracks on the forest floor. Alternatively, you or another adult can press tracks into the soft ground yourself using a stencil. An exciting search for tracks with a learning effect.
10. Forest Treasure Hunt – Adventure With Map and Puzzles

11. The Silent Hunter – Concentration in Stealth Mode
A forest game for more peace and mindfulness: one child is the “hunter”, the others are
“animals” that sneak quietly through the forest. The hunter stands with his back to the group. When he turns around, everyone has to stand still as if petrified. Anyone who moves is eliminated. This game trains body control and concentration.
12. Forest Memory – Attentively Through the Forest
The children form pairs. Each team looks for ten small natural objects in the forest (e.g.
cones, leaves, pieces of bark) and lays them out on a cloth. They then cover the objects and swap the cloth with another team. The new players now have one minute to memorize the objects before trying to find the same objects themselves in the forest.
The game trains memory, perception and attention to detail in nature.
All of these forest games can be flexibly adapted to age, group size and season. They not only promote movement, perception and social behavior, but also help to build a connection to nature – playfully, with all the senses and without any digital distractions.
Forest Games for Adults – Experience Nature With Fun and Exercise
Adults are also allowed to play – and particularly enjoy doing so outdoors. The forest offers a wonderful setting for this: far away from everyday life, surrounded by natural tranquillity and fresh air, it is easy to switch off and engage in shared experiences. Whether for team building, a company outing, a stag party or simply as an activity among friends – forest games for adults not only promote exercise, but also communication, creativity and cohesion.
The games can be a little more challenging, both physically and mentally. Skill, cooperation and strategic thinking can be just as important as humor and spontaneity. Here are twelve inspiring forest games for adults that are suitable for both smaller groups and larger teams.
1. Forest Rally – Station Run With Nature Knowledge
Set up various stations in the forest with quiz questions on nature topics (e.g. trees, animals, herbs, environmental protection). Participants move from station to station as individuals or teams and answer the questions. Bonus tasks such as “Find a leaf with five points” provide variety. Whoever collects the most points wins.
For example, you can find inspiration here at our own forest rally, which we once created and tested ourselves.
2. Forest Yoga – Relaxation Among the Trees
The forest not only offers adventure, but also peace and relaxation. In this game, the participants gather in a quiet, flat place in the forest. One person leads simple yoga or stretching exercises – with a focus on mindfulness and breathing. The sounds, smells and impressions of nature are consciously taken into account. You can also combine yoga exercises with walking or running phases. For example, go for a 5-minute run in the forest, then do 3 yoga poses in a quiet place, etc.
Forest yoga not only strengthens your body awareness, but also your connection to nature and has a wonderful decelerating effect.
3. Orientation Run – Teamwork With Compass and Map
The group is divided into teams. Each team is given a map or coordinates and has to find certain points in the forest. Tasks or small clues await there. Whoever finds the best route and solves all the tasks wins. A sporty game that promotes coordination, teamwork and logical thinking.
4. Forest Kim Game – Memory Training With Natural Materials
Named after Rudyard Kipling’s novel hero Kim: Place 15 natural objects (e.g. pine cones, nuts, bark, feathers) under a cloth. The participants are allowed to look at the objects for 30 seconds, then the cloth is covered again. Who can remember and name the most objects? Variation: one object is secretly removed – what is missing?
5. Noise Rally – Listening Instead of Looking
This game is about consciously “wandering” through the forest with your ears. The group splits into small teams and is given a list of natural sounds to discover – e.g. birds chirping, rustling leaves, cracking branches, splashing water or the buzzing of an insect. Whoever finds the most sounds in a set period of time and can describe them credibly wins.
The game promotes mindfulness and sensitizes children to acoustic impressions in nature.
6. Forest Tug-Of-War – Test of Strength on the Forest Floor
A classic game with natural materials: two teams compete against each other in a tug-of-war – e.g. with a thick rope or a long branch. Who will pull who across the line? This physical activity brings power, fun and competition to the group – preferably in a flat, safe clearing.
7. Nature Art Challenge – Getting Creative With Forest Materials
In small groups, the participants use found objects from the forest (leaves, branches, stones, cones) to create a small work of art on the ground – e.g. a symbol, an animal, a forest creature or a mandala. The works are then presented and, if necessary, “awarded” prizes. Ideal for creative minds and visual people.
8. Forest Sprint With Obstacles – Course With Natural Power

9. Blind Trust – Together Through Nature
Teams of two are formed. One person closes their eyes and the other guides them through the forest – only with verbal instructions or with a hand on their shoulder. The “blind” participant concentrates on sounds, smells and the forest floor underfoot. Then they swap places. Promotes trust and mindfulness.
10. Inventing a Forest Story – Creative Storytelling in the Countryside
The group sits down in a circle and makes up a story together that takes place in the forest. One person begins with a sentence (“As we went deeper into the forest, we suddenly heard…”), then it’s the next person’s turn. The story can be imaginative, funny or exciting – the main thing is that it takes an unexpected turn. A great game for creative minds and storytellers.
11. Tracking – On the Trail of the Forest
The group sets off in search of animal tracks or other evidence of life in the forest – footprints, gnaw marks, feathers or feeding spots. Who can find the most tracks and identify them correctly? A nature guide app or an identification book helps with the classification. This game sharpens the eye and awakens the spirit of discovery.
12. Smell Duel – The Nose as a Sensory Organ
In small teams or in pairs, the participants collect various fragrant forest materials: needles, resin, herbs, bark, soil. The materials are then placed in opaque bags. The aim is to correctly identify the scent blindfolded or without looking. Whoever correctly identifies the most scents wins. Sensory fun that shows how much is “in the air” in the forest.
These forest games show: Adults can and should play too – especially in nature. The activities invite you to leave the stress of everyday life behind, promote togetherness and make it possible to experience the forest in a completely new way. Whether in movement, in silence or in creative expression – everyone will find a suitable way to connect with nature and other people. And those who play stay young not only physically but also mentally.
And now have fun with these forest games!
